What to do about cramps (and other painful symptoms during your menstrual cycle)

If you find yourself asking, “What can I do TODAY to make my periods better?”, keep reading.

When something is off with your body, you just know it. The first irregular symptom I experienced was spotting. I had never spotted before and right away I knew something was wrong. I had gained 20lbs in less than a year and my body was reacting negatively to all of the extra weight. After multiple doctors visits and long hours of research, I knew the spotting was directly related to my hormone imbalance—specifically, estrogen dominance.

From there, I started to find natural ways to remove excess estrogen through my body’s natural detox process (via the liver, skin, and bowel movements). This is how I put the puzzle pieces together and realized that what I eat, how much physical activity I get, and my digestive (gut) health all play a huge part in the menstrual cycle. It’s all connected!

So, why is Menstrual Health So Important?

Besides the fact that having a period and ovulating means you can most likely conceive, your period is also an indication of your overall health. Think of it as a health meter.

How Can I Improve My Menstrual Cycle?

Anyone who menstruates knows that their period is usually the least favorite time of the month. We deal with PMS, cramps, back pain, heavy bleeding, painful bowel movements, bloating, tender breasts, and nausea, to name a few. Improving your menstrual health can start with the most troublesome system you’d like to experience less of. For me, it was spotting. Pick one symptom you’d like to improve and talk to your doctor, GYN, or other health professional about it.

Now that I’ve Picked a Painful Symptom to Tackle, What Next?

You need to write down the characteristics of this symptom: Has it worsened over time? Do any foods or drinks make the pain more intense? Do certain smells affect you? What brings you temporary relief? Get clear on what you’re feeling and how it affects your body throughout your period.

I’ve Tracked My Symptoms. When Can I Start Feeling Relief?

The most important thing you can do is identify the root cause of your pain. You can speak with your GYN, holistic nutritionist, naturopathic doctor, or dietitian for help. What If They Can’t Help Me?

First of all, get that thought out of your mind! Please understand that there are other menstruators like you who are suffering from the same pain. I was one of them and believed that painful periods were not normal. I needed relief and was willing to work hard to get it. Help is out there for you too! As long as you’re tracking your symptoms, they can use that as a starting point to help you find relief. Keeping a positive outlook during this process is key!
