Building healthy lifestyle habits is so much more than trying a 21-day cleanse, going Keto, drinking weight loss teas, or wearing waist trainers. There’s a lot of unlearning and re-learning that takes place in the process, which is necessary to understand where you are now versus where you want to be. Developing healthy habits requires a mindset shift. The most important question you need to ask yourself before trying anything new is “why”? A very simple but necessary question. Here are some examples: Why do you want to eat healthy? Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to workout 4x a week? Finding your “why” gives your mission purpose. By defining this, you’ll always have it to serve as a reminder of why you started in the first place. See how it all ties together? With that said, here are my “why’s” for starting The Period Plug.
Food
In the past few years, I’ve learned so much about the food industry. I’ve also realized that there are a lot of young women who are suffering from chronic pain, specifically during their periods, and through my own trial and error I’ve learned that nutrition is a huge factor. Yeah, who knew? I’m letting you know 3 things when it comes to improving your food habits:
- Plant-based food isn’t boring
- You define what eating habits you want to establish. There is no one-size fits all approach to healthy living. We’re all unique and have different health challenges that exist outside of menstrual health.
- Don’t overwhelm yourself with information. You can’t implement every change over night, so be patient with yourself. Ask questions, look for support groups, and stay connected with your doctor or other health professional.
Wellness
Yoga and meditation have helped me in so many ways! The art of being present is not practiced by many people because of our fast-paced lifestyle. Learning how to focus on the present rather than obsessing about the future or ruminating over the past has greatly improved my mental health. I honestly wish meditation was required curriculum in American schools.
I’ve also learned the power of incorporating a clean diet along with routine exercise, and how together, they positively impact a woman’s health. Our menstrual cycle is tied to our overall health so much that Lisa Hendrickson-Jack, Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner, wrote a book titled The Fifth Vital Sign. It’s a book to help menstruators master their menstrual cycle and optimize fertility.
I support all things that enhance overall wellness and I’m always learning new ways to take care of myself–you should too! Taking care of our bodies is the most important job we have 🙂
Women’s Health
Many topics aren’t discussed enough in women’s health, especially when it comes to menstrual cycles and reproductive health. The more I work through my healing journey, the more I’m compelled to help others who suffer from the same irregular menstrual symptoms that I had. I think we each have a responsibility to advocate for our own health and do what’s best for our bodies.
