In the past few years, I’ve learned so much about the food industry. When it comes to overall health, there are a lot of young women suffering from chronic pain, specifically during their periods, and I’ve learned that food is a huge factor.
What is a Food Diary?
A food diary is a place to keep a daily log of what you eat and drink. My blog is a digital food diary that I also use to share everything I eat for less painful periods. You can also write down foods in a journal or use a food tracking app. This is beneficial for many reasons:
- Food diaries can help you and your doctor better understand your eating patterns and work to identify the root cause of your painful periods
- Identify any food sensitivities or allergies you may have, and recognize which foods your body loves (NOT just what your tastebuds enjoy)
- Can help you eat more intuitively, paying attention to foods that nourish you and make you feel good, rather than sluggish and tired
So, how do I track my meals?
Tracking your meals could help you identify foods and drinks that increase inflammation in your body and make your period cramps worse. Inflammation is a natural response to invaders and injury that the body may experience. The problem arises when we have chronic inflammation. This can be triggered by a number of things, alcohol, caffeine, processed sugar, sweet snacks and desserts, and even diary (yup, your beloved cheese).
On the bright side, tracking your meals can help you figure out what foods you should be eating more of, especially in the week leading up to your period. I can’t stress enough how important it is to prepare your body for your menstrual bleed BEFORE it arrives. I noticed that dark leafy greens, fruit, omega-3s, and healthy fats greatly reduce the intensity of my cramps once my period starts. It’s amazing how powerful food is!
Remember, everyone’s body is different, so talk to your doctor to come up with the best plan for changing your food choices. I’d recommend speaking to a nutritionist or dietician as well. My rule of thumb is always listen to your body, it’s your best guide!
